We have an energy efficient lightbulb, and it just popped and leaked a little bit of smoke or gas. What is it?

It just made a really loud popping noise, and a little bit of what appeared to be a smoke or gas came out. Should I be concerned about this?

DO NOT INHALE THAT!!! IT IS MERCURY!!! have you ever heard the phrase..”mad as a hatter”??? that comes from hatters using mercury on the the edges of panama hats which were popular back in the day…after inhaling even small amounts of mercury caused all these hatters to go insane..seriously,. those bulbs are very dangerous if they break.
furthermore, i am beside myself that none of these jerks like al gore or the “green” people here, are’nt coming to help you or warn you..they encourage you to go out and buy these evil little mind-blowers, and now they just look at you like a cow at a passing train as you slowly lose your mind…call the epa right now!!

Through it away. The puff of smoke is mercury coming out. There is not a dangerous quantity in a single bulb, the average bulb contains only 5 milligrams. By comparison, a paperclip weighs five grams, or 5000 milligrams. You are not in life threating danger by this much, but it can be dangerous. just dont go breaking 1,000 bulbs and inhaling the smoke. (that is how many it would take to equal the weight of a paperclip)

THis is only a small danger when you consider that a thermometer contains several thousand times as much mercury as a lightbulb. And the good outweighs the bad, because CFL can save over US$30 in electricity costs over the bulb’s lifetime compared to an incandescent bulb and save 2000 times their own weight in greenhouse gases

Be very careful with disposal since there is a low level of mercury content in the bulb. Check with the manfacturer or your local hazardous waste center to see how to dispose of it properly.

Just buy LED light bulbs. They don’t have any chemicals inside of them and they use less energy and last longer than CFL’s.
