Did they change the light bulb laws in the US or just Canada ?

February 20th, 2010 by My Efficient Planet Leave a reply »

The old light bulbs — which were round and used 60 to 100 watts are being phased out in Canada –(I forget which year they will no longer be available for purchase)

As a result the old light bulbs are on sale everywhere

Ontario Hydro , top scientist David Suzuki and so on are advocating for the new energy efficient light bulbs

Suzuki has been putting the message into a Canadian format and spreading it

“Less electricity equals more beer”

The say you can save about 45 dollars a year per light bulb — so I thought make that 36 dollars a year or 3 dollar a month times 10 light bulbs –30 dollars a month or 360 per year

I have been buying them with the idea that I will save money on my next hydro bill ( more money for beer) and that I am doing something good to reduce power consumption

———– Here is the only draw back to using them I have found — there can be up to a 5 second delay when turning them on to lighting the room — other than that it appears brighter than the regular bulbs for slightly less than 1/4 of the electricity 13 watts compared to 60

Has any of this all of this or some of this het the US yet ?

I like Sukuki’s message better – but the above link is far more informative

they are an option here..growing in popularity, but it is not a law.

  2. El Tecolote says:

No. Unlike Canada, we give a crap about the mercury content in those curly-cue fluorescent bulbs and what it will do to our soil when they start finding their way into the landfills by the tens of thousands.

I have heard many talking about the good and bad of these bulbs. the good is lower power bills and the bad is there is mercury or some other substance in them that is harmful to the environment. It has been a while and I really don’t remember exactly what it is.

We haven’t risen to the level of civilization that allows us to worry about light bulbs. Too busy blowing up $#it.

  5. DAR says:

We have them but they aren’t mandatory, and the mercury in them causes its own problems. In CA you are supposed to take them to a ‘household hazardous waste’ location.

    Yeah, right.

    What will really be cool
is when the Solid-State-Emitters become cheep ’nuff through mass production to replace those Compact Florescent lamps.

Solid-State-Emitters will last a LONG time and so will not hit the land fill in the mass that the CF type lamps are.

must be just Canada, I bought 4 old style bulbs for 1.49 yesterday

I know for sure that is doesn’t save any money (because we have a lot of those bulbs). CFLs are not only hazardous to the environment because of all the extra plastic and mercury that will go into landfills (because they’re replacing regular bulbs without plastic and mercury), but they don’t save you any money. It’s an Orwellian lie that energy conservation saves money! That’s only true if only a few are doing it. If most are doing it because of “energy saving” appliances ad bulbs, the energy companies raise the prices to make up for any lost income. That means that you end up paying the same amount or more for less energy! That means that energy is more expensive and made more valuable–which means that it’s really good for energy companies and private speculators! And they are mandating this switch over all over the world! Even though it’s also bad because it “blinks” and causes headaches, sleep disturbances, depression, brain fog, and other more serious health problems!

“People suffering from medical conditions are most at risk as are those whose job involves close work with their hands under a light bulb, such as jewellery makers.

The HPA said people who have to use the lamp close to them should switch to an encapsulated style of energy saving light bulb, where the outer layer of glass looks more like a traditional bulb.

But it said families should not remove energy saving light bulbs from their homes and played down any risk of skin cancer.

Justin McCracken, the agency’s chief executive, said: “We are not saying these could cause cancer.

“At the exposure levels we are talking about the worst effect that we believe there is as result of our investigation is that people could have some short-time reddening of their skin.

“We do not believe that these lights pose any significant risk in terms of skin cancer. This is precautionary advice and people should not be thinking of removing these energy saving light bulbs from their homes.

“We are advising people to avoid using the open light bulbs for prolonged close work until the problem is sorted out and to use encapsulated bulbs instead.

“In other situations, where people are not very likely to be very close to the bulbs for any length of time, all types of compact fluorescent light bulbs are safe to use.”

Fluorescent lights emit a lot more electromagnetic radiation than regular bulbs. And people are already getting EMF overload and sensitivity (we should at least get some relief from EMFs at home with regular phones and lights that aren’t harsh). CFLs and digital TV are two government mandated products that are being forced on American consumers–will mandated wireless phones be next?

  9. neo hippie says:

no. but we still need at least three government employees to figure out how to screw in a light bulb down here in the states…

  10. Not a sheep says:

They’re not mandatory here, YET. But they will make it mandatory that there are no more incandescents any longer available for purchase. There will be a HUGE black market for them. And for all the people that are screaming they last longer, I thought about the last time I had to replace a bulb in my condo that I’ve lived in for 8 years. Lets see, the two bulbs in the bathroom light above the mirror – NEVER, the two ceiling lights in my kitchen area – NEVER, the lights in my closets (which there are 5) – Only one because I broke it placing a box on a shelf. (and I didnt have to call the EPA for a toxic waste spill) Living room and bedroom floor lamps are halogens and I’ve had to replace those at least once. So lets see, how much have I saved? Well, I havent had to shell out $4 for any new bulbs yet and I have about 15 light bulbs to replace them when they go. I will never be told by a government what I should and shouldnt buy when I am given a CHOICE. Oh and the mercury thing? OMG! Why would I want something like THAT in my house?! I bet soon, you will be able to find them going for a mint on eBay!
