Which method is right to saving energy?

August 26th, 2010

Question by eml: Which method is right to saving energy?
I always hear that having a programmable thermostat to adjust the temps in your house for when you’re not there will save energy and lower utility bills. However, I was on the web site of a Heating and Air Conditioning company looking at their FAQ and Tips page for a different reason and one of their “tips” was that changing the temperature during the day doesn’t actually save energy because your system has to work harder to reach the “home” temperature setting. Which is correct?

It’s best to shut off your air conditioner when no one’s home. It’s the same logic as turning off the lights as you leave a room. If you’re only leaving the room for a few minutes however, you might as well leave the setting right where it is.

I once tested every electrical device in our house to see which ones used the most electricity. The worst by far was the air conditioner, so this is a great place to start when trying to save electricity.
